Medicines Waste Awareness

As a practice we are very keen to promote the best use of limited NHS resources

There is a large issue associated with the wastage of medicines. In Shropshire alone we could save one million pounds if less medicines were wasted.

There are numerous different causes of wasted medicines some of which are unavoidable. For example, if you have a significant side effect soon after starting a new medication the rest of the pack will be wasted. Other causes relate to the prescribing practices of doctors or the legislation regarding medicines returned to pharmacies.

There are also patient reasons as to why medicines may be wasted. We would really appreciate your help in trying to reduce waste. Only order the medications that you need, try not to stock pile medications through over ordering. The stock piling of medication is wasteful and potentially hazardous. At medication reviews or when you are seeing a member of staff at the surgery please let us know if the quantities prescribed on repeat is leading to waste we will be happy to adjust the prescription. If you have stopped taking a medication please let us know and we will discuss alternatives if necessary or simply remove that drug from your prescription.

We are also very keen to hear any ideas you may have on how to reduce waste, please let us know at the surgery.
